Faulty electrical wiring can cause fires and electrocution. Common causes of electrical faults are poor installations, loose terminals, faulty appliances, overloading, rodent damage, water egress or damaged wiring.
3 common faults are short circuits, earth faults and overloads.
A short circuit occurs when a “hot” (active) wire and a neutral return wire touch each other, when this happens a large amount of current flows in the circuit causing the protective device to either blow (fuse) or trip (circuit breaker).
An earth fault occurs when a “hot” (active) wire comes into contact with earth (ground). Similar to a short circuit, a large amount of current flows in the circuit causing the protective device to operate.
Overloads occur when too much load is applied to a particular circuit causing the protective device to heat up and open circuit.
In all cases it is imperative that the protective device operates before the cabling or appliance overheats and ignites causing potential risk to people and property. In the event of an earth fault this could be the difference between life and death.
To ensure your electrical installation meets requirements and risks are minimised, you have to ensure that all electrical installations are carried out by licenced and trained Electricians. Electricians who are well versed in the electrical wiring rules and regulations and have the specialist test equipment to test and verify your installation.
Datatel pride itself on having only the best Electricians who have undertaken additional training outside of their apprenticeships ensuring that they have kept up to date with industry trends and best practices. Fault finding is an art, it is what makes our electricians stand out from the crowd, it is relatively easy to identify a fault but it is a lot harder to pin point it and rectify the problem within a reasonable time frame.
Understanding and interpreting the test results is essential and when completing a new installation ensuring all the relevant tests are carried out and are recorded on every installation.
It is mandatory for customers to receive a copy of the Electrical Safety Test Certificate after completion of any electrical work.
